W3: Soundscapes: a Sense of Place with Sounds and Drawings

$140.00

WORKSHOP
W3

Friday afternoon

Mário Linhares

Soundscape is a term coined by Michael Southworth in 1969 but developed and popularized by the Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer. In this workshop, we will understand and use this concept to combine two of the most important Sensory Systems we have: 1. Visual; 2. Auditory.

Traditionally, drawing on location highlights our vision skills combined with drawing practice. What we will do in this workshop is add a new layer into the activity of drawing on-location, allowing Hearing to command Vision and Drawing to do a different final piece that reveals more than a specific technique or a point of view.

All sounds and voices we’ll hear will be collected and organized to give directions to the eye and hand. We will not draw from memory or imagination but, instead picking one point of view or one panorama view, we will be looking around, following the sounds, and sketching what we see from where they come from.
