Capturing Informal Public Life: The Third Place

Workshop description
Sociologist Ray Oldenburg coined the term “third place” (after home, first, and workplace, second) for the informal public spots where people come together — coffee houses, pubs, sidewalk cafes, bookstores — that encourage interaction, conversation, connections and exchanging of ideas. They help define a community and share a lively energy we can capture in our sketches. You’ll learn to create a quick, loose line sketch, techniques for drawing people, strategic use of color and dramatic darks to capture that lively energy, the light, colorful umbrellas and furnishings, as well as funky signs and other details. We may even grab a coffee and pastry. Let’s go!
