Building a Spiral of Attention
Workshop description
Do you struggle starting a sketch or get lost in the details? This workshop will help you defeat the blank page, and start and finish every drawing — no matter how complicated the scene. We achieve this by constructing a spiral of attention on the page, working outwardly from the highest point of interest to elements of decreasing importance. The more curious we are about something, the more attention we give it; the less curious, the fewer details we include. The second half of this workshop discusses layering as a technique to emphasize your chosen subjects while de-emphasizing less important elements. By simplifying scenes into areas of varying interest, we free ourselves to follow our curiosity and communicate effectively with viewers of our art.
Supplies
- Primary tool: an ink pen, fineliner or pencil
- Secondary tool: 1-2 colors of your choice (POSCA markers, color pencils, non-black fineliner) OR 1-2 fineliners (one thicker and the other thinner than the primary tool)
- Paper: Your choice of sketchbook is fine. I will bring sketchbooks to show my previous work, but will draw in a larger single sheet to illustrate the lessons.
