Colorful Monochrome

Workshop description
This workshop explores the expressive possibilities of sketching in monochrome. By putting aside color as a driving force of picture making, we’ll put emphasis on the other basic drawing elements: line, tone, shape, form, texture and pattern. In particular, we’ll focus on the importance of “value” (the balance of dark and light) and composition in monochromatic works. We’ll learn how to use a single color in a colorful way — full of visual interest. We’ll draw from a number of approaches to reveal how the world before us can be translated with tone and marks to express mood and meaning.
Supplies
Participants should bring a variety of their favorite materials, but be sure to have line and tone-making options.
- Line: (pens, pencils, colored pencils, crayons)
- Tone: (brushes with ink or watercolor (and water), crayons)
- Color: black is perfect for this workshop, but so are other dark pigments, like brown.
