Sketcher Fest Edmonds is pleased to unveil the official poster for this year’s event, featuring original artwork commissioned from Shoreline artist David Chamness, a recently retired architect and longtime urban sketcher.
Chamness was inspired to capture the unique roundabout at the intersection of 5th Avenue and Main Street. “It is the cultural and commercial center of Edmonds,” he said.
The ink and watercolor sketch is a testament to his keen eye. From a bench on the northeast corner of the intersection, he found the perfect viewpoint to include several Edmonds landmarks: the eye-catching “Cedar Dreams” fountain by local artist Benson Shaw; the historic Beeson Building with its distinctive red tiled awnings; and the Edmonds Theater, a fixture on Main Street since 1923. A glimpse of Puget Sound appears in the background.
“Many people only see Edmonds as they drive to take the ferry to Kingston,” said Chamness, “But they miss the downtown village with its charming historic core and Washington state’s first Creative District.”
Chamness, a sketcher for more than 40 years and a member of Urban Sketchers Seattle since 2012, is returning to Sketcher Fest as a guest artist for a third year. He will teach a workshop about travel sketching and give a talk about his recent six-month trip to Europe. “I’ll share how I managed to make more than 300 sketches in 151 days while visiting Germany, Poland, England and Turkey,” he said.
Now in its fourth edition, Sketcher Fest brings together urban sketchers, travel sketchbook artists, art vendors, publishers and the general public during a weekend of workshops, lectures and exhibits in Edmonds, Washington.
The first event of its kind outside of Europe, Sketcher Fest blends the learning spirit of the Urban Sketchers Symposia with the festival atmosphere of the popular Carnet de Voyage events in France. The goal of Sketcher Fest is to celebrate art, travel and the practice of documenting people, places and culture in sketchbooks.
Copies of the Sketcher Fest poster will be available for purchase during Sketcher Fest at the Edmonds Waterfront Center, July 11-12.
