Structure & Subtlety: the Split Complementary Palette

Workshop description
Learn to sketch in an offbeat color palette, highlighting a focal point and emphasizing a particular mood. The workshop begins with a primer in color theory, and then delves into one kind of color relationship: split complementary. This adaptable color system utilizes a base color plus two hues opposite on the color wheel. With these, students will learn to harness both strong contrasts and harmonious neutrals in a single image, creating both structure and subtlety in their sketch. This is an ideal workshop for intermediate sketchers: those already familiar with shape, value, and how to draw on location. Students may use watercolors or mixed media.
