Printmaking on the Go: Wild Textures Tamed with Stencils

In this workshop we will be combining simple paper stencils made on location with urgent, expressive, and diverse mark making. Students will learn basic ideas and techniques traditionally used in printmaking but adapted for working quickly and on the go. Using stencils will allow students to think about sketching in a whole new way. As an exercise, we will create two takes of the same scene, one using the stencils to create an initial feeling and composition, and another using the stencils to finish the sketch by adding depth, volume, and interest. Blending stencil textures with your own mark-making style will open up new possibilities for your regular sketching practice.

Supplies

  • Brush pen with ink (i.e. Pentel pocket brush.) We will use ink from the pen as our main ink for printmaking.
  • Black pencil or black ballpoint pen
  • Two regular school pencils that you do not mind never using again. We will use one to make a printmaking tool. The other one should have an eraser at the end.
  • Art tape or washi tape
  • Paper pad with sturdy cardboard backing (i.e. 6” x 8” Strathmore drawing pads.) We will use the back side as a cutting board. You can use your sketchbook and just bring a piece of sturdy cardboard of a similar or larger size to be used as a cutting board.
  • Some post-it notes (regular size)
  • Bring your usual sketching materials as well
  • Stool or folding chair
