Bend the Rules with Animation Techniques

The traditional rules of composition, perspective and figure drawing can lead to drawings that feel too technical. If you are looking to add a cinematic feel to your urban sketches and capture the emotion of a moment, this workshop is for you. I’ll share tips from my experience as an animator and art director in the film industry to help enhance storytelling in your urban sketches. We’ll examine how animators draw in unconventional ways — and apply this approach when sketching the city. Note that this workshop is not about drawing in a ‘cartoony’ style — the techniques we’ll cover are in the underdrawing stage, so you can apply them to your own style. At the end of the workshop, you will have learned new ways to add structure, emotion and action to your urban sketches.

Supplies

  • Bring your favorite sketching tools.
  • A portable stool or folding chair is highly recommended unless you are comfortable sitting outdoors on the ground or would rather sketch standing up.
