Alex Hollmann
Alex Hollmann was born and brought up in South Africa, the grandchild of Russian, Dutch, Irish, and British immigrants. He teaches Classics at the University of Washington but his other great love is ink drawing and watercolor painting out and about in Seattle and while travelling. He enjoys the challenges, adrenaline-rush, and feelings of oneness with the world that come from on-site sketching.

Workshop
Want to make watercolor sketches on the spot when travelling but just don’t see how to get started — or how to produce something right there and then without spending hours on it? This workshop will give you some pointers on how to size up a scene, sit down, get going quickly with watercolor — and get out. Some suggestions I’ll show: find a hook and an anchor for your picture; use a thicker pen or pencil; use a bigger brush; use more pigment; use a smaller (or a bigger) format.

I’d always been comfortable drawing in ink while travelling. But integrating watercolor was always a problem until the Covid pandemic and joining a Direct Watercolor Facebook group freed me up.
